The Huntress vs. The Headline: “Man Dies After Self Burying Test”

June 1, 2011

I wasn’t sure I was going to have enough time to update the blog today, but sometimes a headline is so good that you just can’t pass it up. Unlike other headlines with such ‘wonders’ as “Maccas Finally Admits Its Coffee Is Bad”  with thanks to News.com.au, “Her Royal Hotness A Fashion Ace” courtesy of The Courier Mail and “Peeping In Prison” by The Telegraph.com.au.

I wonder what the suicide rate is in journalists?

Today’s headline is simply excellent. I absolutely love the Darwin Awards and I sincerely hope this fellow can at least honour his removal from the gene pool with a well deserved award. Allegedly the 35 year old man wanted to test his endurance and requested his friend help him achieve his goal. I don’t know about you but I would be slightly concerned if a friend made that particular request to me and I would possibly wonder if they were mentally well. But not in this case as the friend aided the victim by punching air holes in a makeshift coffin and burying it along with the victim, a mobile phone, a blanket and a water bottle.

It sounds surprisingly similar as to when you buy a new pet from the pet shop and they put it in a nice little box with air holes and some water for you. But without the burying bit.

It is also alleged that the friend returned to his home after burying the victim and received a phone call from the victim to reassure him he was ok. However after kindly returning to see the victim the next day he discovered that the victim had died. It is speculated that rain overnight blocked air supply to the coffin. Personally, I speculate that perhaps the whole ritual was undertaken poorly – but then it’s not like self burial has a safety manual, unlike erotic asphyxiation (yes, I have checked).

I really don’t know what to say. Apparently self burial is becoming quite the thing in Russia with the state newspaper, the Rossiiskaya Gazeta, featuring an article upon it. Perhaps it will next be seen on ‘Better Homes & Gardens’? If I could actually interpret Russian, or if I knew anyone who could interpret Russian, apparently there are bloggers who write about self-burial, but I can’t so there goes that idea. It doesn’t seem to be a phenomena that English speaking people have caught on to.

Speaking of phenomena the excellent new ‘Rip & Roll’ campaign for safer sex has been reinstalled nationwide after it became clear that the large number of complaints against it were orchestrated by the Australian Christian Lobby. Apparently they were thinking of the children.

Rip, roll and don’t bury yourself kids!

Self-burial may not be here yet but just wait till they get bored with the “planking.”
